Housing, rates dominate election-year politics

This week certainly got off to a better start than last for the Prime Minister. An AC Nielsen poll published in the Fairfax press today suggests his Government may - just may - be starting to close the gap. But one poll in isolation is just another set of numbers and like interest rates, it is the trend that is more important. Having weathered the unwelcome rate rise last week, the Government has been warned it may face another before the next election. A statement from the Reserve Bank today suggests inflationary pressure is still too high. The continuing debate over interest rates comes as Labor launches a plan to help those who have little hope of ever being in the mortgage race - renters.
